Superstar after superstar have paved the way for the Los Angeles Lakers to remain as one of the best teams in the league since the franchise originated in 1947.

The superstars who have led the Lakers to championships and late runs in the playoffs are in the Hall of Fame: George Mikan, Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson and as soon as they wait the required time after retirement, Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant.

Bryant, 33-years old, is slowing down after 16 NBA regular seasons and long playoff runs year in and year out. His 37 points, eight rebounds and six assists against the Houston Rockets in a 108-99 Lakers’ victory on Tuesday is a demonstration he isn’t done yet.

Unfortunately for Bryant and the Lakers, it’s only a matter of time before he is. Each season Bryant plays, his body breaks down a little more and he tore a ligament in his wrist during a preseason game.

The question of who is next has to be ringing in the ears of the Lakers’ owner Jerry Buss and the General Manager Mitch Kupchak.

If the current Lakers team is examined, there seems to be only one legit possibility: center Andrew Bynum.

Power forward Pau Gasol, 31 years old, is a great number two option but he proved he couldn’t be the best player on a team and win games when he was with the Memphis Grizzlies for the first seven seasons of his NBA career. In his time with the Grizzlies, he went to the playoffs in three consecutive seasons but never won a postseason game.

The rest of the Lakers’ roster consists of role players and aging personnel such as Metta World Peace.

Then there is the 24-year old center who has already been in the NBA for six seasons and has won two championships. He is young, he has experience and he has the ability to beast almost every other center in the league. The Orlando Magic’s Dwight Howard is probably the only exception.

While Bryant scored 37 points against the Rockets, Bynum recorded a huge double-double with 21 points and 22 rebounds. When the big man was fed the ball in the paint, no one could stop him.

He is the only player the Lakers have that show signs of being a franchise player or the superstar to lead the team after Bryant is gone.

Bynum is already a star, but he’ll never reach the next level if he can’t stay healthy. He has only played in more than 65 games a season once in his career.

If he is going to be the face of the franchise, which usually means the face of the NBA, he absolutely has to stay healthy and put up 20 plus points and 20 plus rebounds on a nightly basis. A double-double here and there is impressive, but it doesn’t scream, “I’m a franchise player”.

I don’t think he is the right guy for Los Angeles to rely on to keep the team at an elite level. The Lakers should keep Gasol and Bynum together to package their team as a powerful one-two punch.

But, neither one of them can do it on their own. Honestly, without a young point guard, they might not be able to do it together.

The Lakers might have to make some trade negotiations.

Through three games, Andrew Bynum is playing like an NBA All-Star.

On Tuesday night against the Houston Rockets, he achieved a career milestone with his first 20-point, 20-rebound performance at Staples Center. Kobe Bryant said following the game, “There’s plenty more to come… the biggest challenge for him is staying healthy.”

Everyone in Los Angeles understands exactly what Kobe means.

For fans, this scenario is all too familiar. In years past, Bynum has suffered a catastrophic injury just as he hits his stride. If he plays in all 66 games this year, it will be his first full season since his sophomore campaign, the only one in which he played in all 82 games.

The NBA lockout as well as a four game suspension could both be blessings in disguise. The extra time off and shortened season could mitigate the risk of yet another injury. The Lakers will need him this season more than ever after losing a key component to their frontcourt in Lamar Odom.

The loss of Odom via trade this offseason will cause the Lakers to lean heavily on Bynum to get them into the playoffs, let alone make a deep run. Thus far in the 2011-2012 season, Bynum has played at an extremely high level and shown for three games that he can be the player has to be for the team to improve upon a disappointing finish in 2011.

When Bynum plays as well as he is capable of, it takes tremendous pressure off Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol, opening up the floor for their respective games. Defensively, he alters opponents’ shots with regularity and contributes to easy baskets on the other end of the floor.

The task of maintaining his health and fitness will be a game-by-game process. Only time will tell whether or not Bynum will go the direction of Grant Hill and overcome significant injuries or Brandon Roy and be another young player who simply can’t stay on the court.

If he plays like he has so far all season, the Lakers will be a much stronger team and will remain among the league’s elite, despite the loss of a great player like Odom. This kind of start from Bynum is exactly what the team needs to get over the disappointment of a tumultuous offseason.

The Los Angeles Lakers are chum in the ocean, and the 29 other NBA teams are sharks swimming around the proverbial waters of the Staples Center.

Now more vulnerable than ever, the Lakers find themselves with large targets on their backs as a myriad of questions surround the 2011-2012 team.

A new coach, new players, and aging veterans all leave observers wondering just what will become of this team. Given the Clippers new acquisitions, they now have worthy opponent in the competition for best team in Los Angeles.

The doubts and questions are many. Can the team implement a new system in the lockout-shortened season in time to contend for the title? Will Kobe Bryant and other players north of age 30 dodge the effects of injuries and Father Time? Finally and most importantly, does the team have the talent to compete among the elite teams in the Western Conference?

The time has come to address the uncertainty. In a shortened, 66-game season, the answers will come quickly. There is no time for the Lakers to turn the “switch” on and off to conserve energy and prepare for the playoffs.

This year, they need to focus in order to make the playoffs.

Against the Chicago Bulls on Christmas Day, they showed their age and ran out of gas in the late 4th quarter. The loss in Sacramento the following night was embarrassing and was cause for concern among Lakers faithful. The win against Utah on Tuesday night could help to ease the pain, but the long-term sustainability of any real success is what this team has to demonstrate.

The concerns are justified. Though NBA basketball has its ebbs and flows, the Lakers have a shorter margin for error given the difficult offseason they have had.

Losing Chris Paul for what appeared to be political reasons was devastating and ended up costing them valuable pieces to a team that was among the league ‘ s elite last season. Without the 2010-2011 Sixth Man of the Year, Lamar Odom, the Lakers have joined the masses of NBA mediocrity in terms of talent.

Will there be an intangible that gets them past the point of being just another good team?

It ‘ s getting to be too late in the career of Bryant to ask him to carry a team on his own, though if anyone can silence critics with his play, it is number 24.

How they respond this season will define the team in years to come and perhaps even Mike Brown ‘ s legacy as a head coach. It will take longer than just one short season to answer these questions. But there is a lot left to learn about which direction this team will ultimately go in 2012.

On Sunday, Dec. 25, the Los Angeles Lakers opened the 2011/2012 season with an 88-87 loss to the Chicago Bulls

On Sunday, Dec. 25, the Los Angeles Lakers opened the 2011/2012 season with an 88-87 loss to the Chicago Bulls. Derrick Rose hit the game-winning shot with 4.8 seconds left in the game.

Here are three thoughts on the game:

It wasn’t pretty

If fans thought they were tuning in to watch high-quality basketball, then I’m sure many people were left highly disappointed. Both teams were extremely sloppy with the ball, especially in the first quarter. Later in the game, the Bulls actually went through a stretch in the second half where they shot for less than 20 percent from the floor. The Lakers also struggled offensively, especially when Kobe Bryant was on the bench in the second quarter. The NBA sold this game to the fans as a Christmas Day special, and it probably would have been if it was broadcast during a normal 82-game season. However, despite a thrilling end to the game, sometimes it was brutal to watch.

Free throw woes

Derrick Rose may have hit the game-winning shot, but the Lakers missed four straight free throws with the game still in the balanmce late in the fourth quarter. Pau Gasol missed two of those shots, despite being a strong free throw shooter throughout his career. Overall, the Lakers were 11 of 20 from the line in the game. That’s not good enough to beat a team as strong as the Bulls, especially with Andrew Bynum out of the lineup. I expect more out of a club that has won two out of the last three NBA titles.

The Lakers bench surprised me

Steve Blake scored 12 points off the bench for the Lakers, while new addition Troy Murphy had seven points and eight rebounds. Even rookie Andrew Goudelock got in on the action with two crucial three-pointers. The Lakers were thought to have a weaker bench this season with Lamar Odom and Shannon Brown gone, but if these players keep giving an effort like they did against the Bulls, the team will be fine.

Overall, it was a heart-breaking loss for the Lakers, but there’s no rest for the weary. Hopefully, the team picks up its first victory of the season on Monday night at the Sacramento Kings.

Derek Ciapala has been a fan of the Los Angeles Lakers since childhood. His favorite Lakers’ moment is when they beat the Detroit Pistons 108-105 in Game 7 of the 1988 NBA Finals. You can follow him on Twitter @dciapala.

LOS ANGELES — Lakers coach Mike Brown is worried about Derrick Rose. Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau is worried about Kobe Bryant.

Sounds like the lockout is over and it’s time for the NBA season opener.

“He’s so fast and explosive,” Brown said of Rose. “He’s obviously extremely athletic and intelligent, a hard worker. It’s not going to be one guy to stay in front of him. It’s going to be a team effort.”

Thibodeau said similar words about Bryant, who had been shooting left-handed in practice because of the torn ligament in his right wrist but will indeed shoot right-handed.

“When you’re guarding Kobe, it has to be our team,” Thibodeau said. “You can’t guard a guy like that individually. We have to make him work but you can’t over-commit because he’s such a great passer.”

Richard Hamilton will start on Bryant in the Christmas Day matinee.

“Watching him in the preseason, he looks like he has renewed energy on both ends,” Brown said of Hamilton. “This team is a deep team. They’re very, very well coached. Don’t look for their season to end anytime soon.”

Following one of the worst off-seasons in recent memory, the Los Angeles Lakers franchise is facing an uphill battle in the wake of the Chris Paul trade that never was. Now, the team must put this behind them and focus on reasserting itself among the elite teams in the Western Conference.

Dwyane Wade covering Kobe Bryant.
Bleacher Report

Here are five keys to their success in 2011-2012:

1. Stay Healthy

It is difficult to quantify just how big of a setback Lamar Odom’s departure will create. The area that will suffer the most as a result is depth. Now, it will be extremely important that the likes of Andrew Bynum, Pau Gasol, and Kobe Bryant all make it through the shortened season virtually injury free. Should there be a significant injury to any one of the Lakers’ three best players, the season will be in jeopardy and another early exit in the playoffs is a likely result.

2. Embrace the new system

Mike Brown will stress defense in his first year as Lakers head coach just as he has throughout his NBA coaching career. The team will need to play to its strength of front court length and dominate the paint and exploit its mismatches down low. The team was sixth in defensive rating in the 2010-2011 season and will likely need to improve in that category to have a chance at a deep playoff run.

3. Follow Kobe

Bryant is 33 years old and is in his 16th NBA season. He has made the playoffs in all but one of those seasons. What that equates to is a lot of wear and tear on the most valuable body in the organization. Lakers fans can only hope that the extra time off because of the NBA lockout allowed Bryant some much needed rest and recovery. According to Bryant himself, that’s exactly what he got . This season, the team will need him to be among the league’s leaders in scoring. It remains to be seen how his latest injury, a sprained wrist, will affect him throughout the year.

4. Find an answer at Point Guard

With Derek Fisher in the twilight of his career and Steve Blake’s inconsistent play last season, the Lakers need to solidify the point guard position, especially defensively. Failing to acquire Chris Paul was a huge blow, and they will have to improve significantly to return to prominence. The best case scenario is that rookie Darius Morris is able to acclimate quickly to the NBA game and contribute right away. Youth is desperately needed on the defensive side of the ball, and he and fellow rookie Andrew Goudelock will be called upon to provide just that.

5. Play with something to prove

Last season’s playoff exit was embarrassing. The team needs to rally around the fact that its last game was simply not Lakers basketball. They need to prove to themselves, their opponents, and fans that they have not lost their identity as a classy, winning franchise. For the first time in a number of years, there are a lot of questions surrounding the team that need to be answered. The Lakers definitely have a chip on their shoulders in 2012, and they need to play like it.

A bizarre offseason for the Los Angeles Lakers has left many unsure what to
expect from one of the NBA’s most storied franchises.

Expectations couldn’t get much higher for reigning MVP Derrick Rose and the
Chicago Bulls despite not much of an offseason stir.

It appears a banged-up Kobe Bryant will play in the season opener as the
Lakers host Rose and the Bulls in a much-anticipated Christmas Day matchup.

After failing to work out a trade for Orlando’s Dwight Howard and seeing its
deal for star point guard Chris Paul – who ultimately landed with the crosstown
Clippers – rejected by the league, Los Angeles enters the season with plenty of
uncertainty.

Former coach and 11-time champion Phil Jackson’s retirement will certainly
take time getting used to, and sending Lamar Odom – a key member of the 2008-09
and 2009-10 title teams – to Dallas for a 2012 first-round pick only fueled the
frenzy surrounding the Lakers.

“I’ve never quite seen something like this unfold,” said Bryant, who expects
to play despite recently tearing a ligament in his right wrist. “Phil (Jackson)
called it years ago. It’s kind of become somewhat of a mess, but I think
everybody is glad that it’s behind them and everybody can move and just talk
about the teams and the season.”

Despite going 57-25 last season to claim a fourth consecutive Pacific
Division crown, the Lakers were ultimately swept by the Mavericks in last
season’s conference semifinals.

Though it was rumored four-time All-Star Pau Gasol was upset about being
part of the Paul deal that fell through, his presence along with that of Bryant
still makes a 17th ring for the Lakers a possibility. However, getting
accustomed to new coach Mike Brown’s system will be a big adjustment as well.

“It’s going to be different, but we still have a lot of talent,” Gasol said.
“We can still have a great season.”

So can Chicago, which likes its chances of contending for a title behind
Rose.

Averaging 25.0 points and 7.7 assists to become the youngest MVP in league
history, Rose – who recently turned 23 – led the Bulls to a league-best 62-20
record in 2010-11 before they fell to Miami in the conference finals.

Chicago hardly changed the roster, with the notable exception of Richard
Hamilton’s addition, and the strong returning corps of Rose, Joakim Noah, Carlos
Boozer and Luol Deng has Bulls fans excited about what lies ahead.

“Our goal is to win a championship, and I think that we have a decent shot
with the guys that we have coming back,” said Rose, fresh off signing a
five-year, $94.8 million extension. “I have a lot of belief in my teammates, and
I know that they have a lot of belief in me and a lot of confidence in me as a
player. That’s all we need.”

Chicago stands to greatly benefit from the acquisition of Hamilton, who
signed a three-year, $15 million deal after being bought out by Detroit. The
12-year veteran has averaged 17.7 points for his career and figures to provide
the Bulls with a consistent scoring threat at shooting guard, something they
clearly lacked last season.

“They were already a great team before me, and I felt it was an opportunity
where I could help,” Hamilton said.

While Chicago will undoubtedly lean on Rose, having Noah and Boozer stay
healthy and contribute consistently also will be key. They missed a combined 57
games last season, and Chicago went 24-5 with both big men in the lineup.

“I felt like we had the team – we still do – to win the whole thing,” said
Deng, who averaged 17.4 points last season. “But going into this year, we’ve got
to focus on us – what we’ve learned from it and how we can get better. We can’t
just focus on one team. There are a lot of good teams in the East, but we’ve
just got to focus on where we’ve got to get better and what we’ve got to do this
year.”

Noah and Boozer won’t have to worry about defending Lakers center Andrew
Bynum, who will begin serving what is now a four-game suspension for making
unnecessary and excessive contact with Dallas’ J.J. Barea in the playoffs.
Bynum’s punishment was reduced by one game due to the shortened season.

His absence surely won’t make things easier on Brown, who planned to move
Metta World Peace to the bench this season but could start the former Ron Artest
while Bynum is out.

“I’m going into the season knowing that this is my team, and I’m happy about
it,” Brown said. “I’m going to coach this team right here, and I’ll let the
perceptions swell. At the end of the season, we’ll see how it all shook out.”

The Lakers had taken seven straight meetings in this series before losing
the most recent one, 88-84 in Chicago last Dec. 10.

That’s all for today.

The Los Angeles Lakers have had a tumultuous last few weeks, but the team gained some sense of stability on Friday as head coach Mike Brown named Devin Ebanks the starter at small forward. Ebanks, a second year wing out of West Virginia, was in a close battle with Matt Barnes for the starting spot in practice and eventually won out with the season opener less than two days away. Here is the story from Andy Kamenetzky:

Brown opted to go with Ebanks, despite the forward’s lack of NBA experience. As a rookie in the 2010-11 season, Ebanks averaged just 5.9 minutes and 3.1 points per game and appeared in only 20 contests before suffering a season-ending stress fracture on his left tibia in March.

However, Ebanks’ improvement was immediately evident during a strong training camp, and he scored eight points in less than 13 minutes on Wednesday during the Lakers’ second preseason game against the Los Angeles Clippers.

“I learned about it today after practice,” said Ebanks. “I’m just ready to go out there and play now.” Brown thought Ebanks “did a nice job.”

There are players around the league the Lakers would rather have than Ebanks, but it may do the team some good to get some fresh legs on the court. LA has aged in recent seasons and Ebanks may be able to provide a nice spark, especially on the defensive end of the floor.

On Tuesday, Dec. 21, the Los Angeles Lakers dropped their second straight preseason game to the Los Angeles Clippers 108-103. Kobe Bryant sat out the matchup with a torn ligament in his right wrist.

Normally, an exhibition game between two teams means absolutely nothing. However, with the all of the drama surrounding the Lakers and Clippers, including Chris Paul trade, I think this year’s preseason series has some importance.

With Kobe Bryant on the bench, the Lakers are definitely in trouble. Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol performed well inside, and Metta World Peace was decent off the bench, but the team doesn’t have the speed on the perimeter to keep up with the Clippers. The Lakers are going to have the same problems they had last year with strong backcourts. Chris Paul, Chauncey Billups and Mo Williams gave the Lakers problems in both games, and that won’t change whether it’s in the preseason or not.

However, the Lakers frontcourt is still the team’s strength, even without the traded Lamar Odom. Bynum was especially dominant on Tuesday night with 26 points on 11 of 15 shooting with 11 rebounds. Both Bynum and Gasol have performed well in both games despite limited minutes. At the moment, I’ll take the Bynum/Gasol team over the Clippers’ Tyson Griffin and DeAndre Jordan.

There is another factor that bears mentioning. The Lakers roster hasn’t settled yet. That was evident in the first game, and it remained the same on Tuesday night. Jason Kapono and Matt Barnes were non-factors in both games, and the rest of the Lakers bench has shown little consistency.

Meanwhile, the Clippers have found effective bench players in Randy Foye, Brian Cook and Mo Williams among others. Each of them had their moments in the two-game set against the Lakers, and they should be able to produce when needed throughout the season.

Overall, if there is anything we can take from the exhibition series, it’s that the Lakers’ weaknesses from last season are still there, and the Clippers roster has settled more quickly than their rivals. If the Lakers don’t find a way to seal up some of their holes, this could be the year the Clippers pass them.

Derek Ciapala has been a fan of the Los Angeles Lakers since childhood. His favorite Lakers’ moment is when they beat the Detroit Pistons 108-105 in Game 7 of the 1988 NBA Finals. You can follow him on Twitter @dciapala.

When the Los Angeles Lakers donated Lamar Odom to the defending champions and the Nets emerged as the frontrunners to acquire Dwight Howard, I wondered: Are the curtains being brought down on the Kobe Bryant era in L.A.?

When the Los Angeles Lakers donated Lamar Odom to the defending champions and the Nets emerged as the frontrunners to acquire Dwight Howard, I wondered:

Are the curtains being brought down on the Kobe Bryant era in L.A.?

In spite of the fact that Byrant had publicly lobbied for both his former teammate Brian Shaw to receive the head coaching job and for keeping the championship nucleus together, the Lakers hired head coach Mike Brown without consulting the Mamba and attempted to blow up the team, twice.

Then, Los Angeles shipped a gift-wrapped Sixth Man of the Year to the Dallas Mavericks, and we all knew Kobe would be furious.

To put Kobe Bryant’s frustration into perspective, he actually joked recently that he’d like to be traded to the Miami Heat and said of the Lakers: “I think we’re terrible … we’re going to be worse [than last year].”

Jokes aside, almost every comment out of Kobe lately is negative. His remarks range from sarcastic to fatalistic and his friend and ESPN insider Stephen A. Smith appeared on SportsCenter and predicted that “Kobe Bryant will demand a trade, and I am not budging from that. He’s livid. I’ve known Kobe too long. He is ticked off.”

Smith added that: “It’s not just because [the Clippers] got Chris Paul, which is a guy that he expected to have. It’s because Jim Buss seems to be doing the inexplicable. … It makes no sense. It’s one thing for the team not to have improved [after losing to the Mavericks], it’s another thing entirely for them to regress. If you know anything about Kobe, that is the last thing that he wants to do.”

Now, it should be noted that in a recent interview with Yahoo’s Marc Spears, Kobe dismissed this notion. When asked if he wanted to stay a Laker, Kobe said: “Of course. No question. Why not? I’ve been here for 16 years. I’m going to up and leave now? … I’ve been with this organization. I like being here. I like playing for the purple and gold. This is where I want to finish up.”

That said, I agree with Stephen A.’s prediction, anyway. I remember back during the Shaq years and even a few years after, Kobe always maintained that he wanted to retire a Laker. Saying that—and even genuinely believing it—didn’t stop a disgruntled Kobe from demanding a trade in 2007, however.

Now, with Pau offended by recent events, Bynum saying he doesn’t really care where he plays and Kobe habitually usurped and disregarded by the Lakers’ front office, I see this situation unfolding similarly.

Unless Los Angeles can trade for Dwight Howard or make other significant moves that make the team a legitimate contender, expect Kobe to demand a trade as soon as he starts feeling helpless again.

LOS ANGELES • The Los Angeles Lakers train only five miles from
the Los Angeles Clippers, close enough to hear the jeers, the
catcalls, the disappointment.

Until late this week, when they were also close enough to feel
the celebrating, and close enough to be crushed by it.

The Hallway Rivalry has taken a series of unimaginable turns
that have left the Lakers in a corner so dark, even Kobe Bryant
can’t see.

“I’m not sure what the hell is the direction, to be honest with
you,” he said.

Five miles north, after years of lingering in the Lakers’
shadow, the Clippers were taking their first steps into what could
be a prolonged and powerful stay in the Los Angeles spotlight.

Here at Lakers camp, Bryant was lost.

“I don’t know, dude,” he said when asked about his team’s
future. “I’m telling you, I don’t know. I’m not going to BS you. I
don’t know.”

Five miles north, the Clippers were preparing to hold a news
conference trumpeting the arrival of star guard Chris Paul.

Here at Lakers camp, they were still grumbling over NBA
Commissioner David Stern’s refusal to approve their initial trade
for Paul, a decision which has sent one of basketball’s most
careful and composed organizations into a dizzying tailspin.

Five miles north, the Clippers were huddling with a new lineup
that will include one of basketball’s greatest passers, two of its
greatest dunkers, and a roster full of speed and daring.

Here at Lakers camp, Bryant is told how many fans now feel the
Clippers are more exciting than the Lakers, and he shrugs.

“I agree,” he said. “I definitely would watch them.”

Five miles north, the Clippers can’t wait for the start of a
season in which they could actually make the playoffs and some
late-spring noise.

Here at Lakers camp, they are waiting for the other sneaker to
drop.

In trading Lamar Odom to the Dallas Mavericks for nothing but a
probable bad draft pick and a trade exception, surely the Lakers
have a master plan to improve themselves in his absence, don’t
they?

“You would think,” Bryant said.

On a day when the Clippers introduced promise, the Lakers
introduced only more change and confusion.

Metta World Peace was talking about becoming a top scorer again,
just before Coach Mike Brown announced that he would be coming off
the bench.

In one corner, Andrew Bynum was talking smack about the
Clippers, yet doing so with a huge brace on his knee and
uncertainty in his ability to stay on the court.

In another corner, Bryant admitted the team might be very
un-Lakers-like under the defensive grip of new Coach Mike
Brown.

“At this stage of our careers, if we’re the boring team, we’re
the boring team, as long as we get results,” he said.

So far, Bryant is not complaining, saying this is not like the
situation in the spring of 2007, when he asked to be traded.

“Nah, the one time I got really upset is, I came to the
realization that they were just cutting costs, just having me run
around, score 40 points a night and generate revenue and not pay
anybody,” Bryant said. “I don’t believe that’s the case now. They
tried to make moves, as you can see. They tried to get Chris. And
they’re talking about trying to get Dwight (Howard). So I’ll just
stay out of their way and let them do it.”

Five miles north, the Clippers have already done it.

Here at Lakers camp, they can only enviously hope.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Even Kobe Bryant can’t figure out why the Los Angeles Lakers apparently are trading Lamar Odom to one of their biggest rivals.

“To be honest with you, I don’t like it,” Bryant said Sunday when the Lakers showed up for their third day of training camp knowing their top reserve probably will be shipped to the Dallas Mavericks for nothing but a trade exception.

“It’s tough to lose Lamar,” Bryant added. “Pau (Gasol) is still here, and we’re all thankful for that. It’s hard when you’ve been through so many battles with players to just see them go somewhere else. It’s tough.”

Neither team formally announced a trade early Sunday, but Dallas coach Rick Carlisle and star Dirk Nowitzki both essentially confirmed the deal, acknowledging their excitement about adding Odom to the defending NBA champions’ roster without losing a player in return.

Odom wasn’t at the Lakers’ training complex Sunday, and his teammates aren’t thrilled to know he’s probably on his way to Dallas, which swept the Lakers out of the second round of the postseason last spring.

“Especially to them,” Bryant said. “We were supposed to come back and get them back. It’s tough. … Do I think we got too little? Who did we get? I don’t think Mark Cuban is protesting this trade.”

Bryant and Derek Fisher don’t know what to make of their front office’s aggressive pursuit of Chris Paul followed by an apparent change of focus toward Orlando center Dwight Howard, who has requested a trade from the Magic, after the NBA blocked a megatrade for Paul on Thursday. Odom didn’t attend the Lakers’ first two days of practice after the team attempted to include him with Gasol in that three-team trade for Paul.

“As a basketball player, it confuses you as to what your focus should be,” Fisher said. “I’m very disappointed and frustrated for (Odom and Gasol).”

Although Bryant expressed his faith in general manager Mitch Kupchak, he would prefer to have Odom in camp as the Lakers regroup from last season’s failed attempt at a threepeat.

“You’re talking about the sixth man of the year last year,” Bryant said of Odom, who averaged 14.4 points, 8.7 rebounds and 3 assists while playing in all 82 games last season. “He played lights-out. I don’t understand the criticism of reality shows and this. I don’t get that. He had his best season last year, clearly wasn’t a distraction, played his (rear) off. I don’t get where that comes from.”

Odom starred in a reality show last season with his wife, Khloe Kardashian, clearly enjoying his celebrity at the main intersection of sports and Hollywood. Kardashian tweeted obliquely about her excitement when news of the apparent trade surfaced Saturday night.

Even Odom’s contract is a good deal for his employers: He will make a modest $8.9 million this season in the third year of a four-year deal, which can be bought out next season for a modest amount. The Lakers’ trade exception means they can acquire a player making Odom’s salary or less without the usual complications, but it would be only one part of a hypothetical deal for Howard or another star.

With this chaos on top of the usual amount of drama surrounding the high-profile Lakers, new coach Mike Brown is attempting to plan for a season with no idea who will be in his lineup in two weeks when Los Angeles hosts the Chicago Bulls in their Christmas season opener. Gasol and fellow big man Andrew Bynum went through their third day of workouts on Sunday not knowing whether they would have a chance to use all this new information.

“If I’m here, I’m looking forward to the season,” said Bynum, who knows he’s rumored to be the main component in any proposed deal for Howard. “If they were able to pull a move like that off, it would be great for the organization, and I’d be in Orlando hooping.”

Lakers forward Matt Barnes has been in contact with Howard, his former teammate in Orlando. Barnes said he doesn’t need to sell Howard on the Lakers.

While Odom stayed away from the Lakers, Gasol reported to the team despite the possibility of his imminent departure. He remains hopeful he’ll stay in Los Angeles, but the four-time All-Star no longer knows what to think about his near future.

“I understand this is a business, and it’s become more of a business than a sport nowadays,” Gasol said. “It hasn’t been extremely easy to be calm and quiet and not think about the different possibilities. But I’m still here, and I’m thankful for that.”

The Los Angeles Lakers began the 2010-2011 season as the two-time defending NBA champions. It was not too much of a stretch to imagine this team winning a third straight title as they did from 2000 to 2002. While the Lakers fell short of that goal these five moments illustrate that the squad was a good team and by most standards they had a good year. After all, 57 wins against 25 losses and a division title in the regular season is a good year.

SEASON OPENER

The season opener is also a high moment for a team, especially when the team is the defending NBA champions. That means ring ceremony; the players receive their championship rings from the 2009-2010 season and the team hangs the championship banner. October 26, 2010 marked opening night in Los Angeles and the Houston Rockets provided the opposition. In the first half Houston made it clear it was not going to give the game to the champs. The teams went into the locker room with Houston leading 62-51. The Lakers came out strong in the third quarter and cut the lead to 5 going into the final quarter. In the end the Lakers prevailed 112 to 110 in a fitting tribute to the prior season. Pau Gasol lead the way with 29 points and Kobe Bryant chipped in 27.

OPENING WIN STREAK

It is always good to get any season off to a strong start and the Lakers started 2010-2011 like they were not going to lose. They ran off seven straight wins and on Tuesday November 9th the Minnesota Timberwolves arrived in Los Angeles with the Lakers looking for their eighth straight win. The Lakers were up to the challenge and carried the day with a 99 to 94 victory. Kobe Bryant lead the Lakers with 33 points. The Lakers would lose game 9 in Denver and the next game at home but then respond with 5 straight wins to run their record to 13-2.

ANDREW BYNUM RETURNS

The Lakers had been playing without its big center Andrew Bynum for the first 24 games. So it naturally was a high point in the season when he returned for game 25 on December 14th against the Washington Wizards. Although Bynum did not start and played only 17 minutes scoring 7 points, his return was huge. The Lakers needed his size and talent if they were to challenge again for the championship. The Lakers won the game 103-89 to extend the season’s record to 18-7.

RECORD WIN

On January 11 2011 the Cleveland Cavaliers with a record of 7-30 arrived in Los Angeles to meet the Lakers who were 27-11. No one expected the Cavaliers to win but the margin of victory exceeded anyone’s expectations. The first quarter ended with the Lakers up 27-12 and that turned out to be just the beginning. At halftime the Lakers lead 57-25 and fans wondered if this could be a record; one for the fewest points scored against the Lakers since the shot clock went into effect. The Cavaliers did improve slightly in the second half but still could only manage 57 points for the entire game, a figure which matched the Laker output in the first half. The final was 112-57 and it is unlikely a team will match that low figure anytime soon. LakersUnivere.com noted the 57 to be indeed a record low against the Lakers since the advent of the shot clock. Seven Lakers scored in double figures and 11 of the 12 players on the team scored. Nine players played at least 16 minutes so the Lakers took advantage of the big win to hand out playing time all around.

KOBE’S RECORD SCORING

One continuing theme of the season has been the movement up the list of all-time scorers in NBA history by Kobe Bryant. He started the season in 12th place and on March 8th in Atlanta against the Hawks he scored 26 points to reach 27,423 for his career according to LakersUniverse.com. This put Kobe at number six and any further movement will have to wait until the 2011-2012 season. The team won the game 101-87 to improve to 46-19 on the season.

NOTE: I have followed the Lakers my whole life. From Jerry West to Magic Johnson to Kobe Bryant with all the other great players they have been and continue to be a truly great franchise. The Lakers have won sixteen titles; five as the Minneapolis Lakers and eleven in Los Angeles

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP)—Even Kobe Bryant can’t figure out why the Los
Angeles Lakers apparently are trading Lamar Odom to one of their biggest rivals.

“To be honest with you, I don’t like it,” Bryant said Sunday when the
Lakers showed up for their third day of training camp knowing their top reserve
probably will be shipped to the Dallas Mavericks for nothing but a trade
exception.

“It’s tough to lose Lamar,” Bryant added. “Pau (Gasol) is still here, and
we’re all thankful for that. It’s hard when you’ve been through so many battles
with players to just see them go somewhere else. It’s tough.”

Neither team formally announced a trade early Sunday, but Dallas coach Rick
Carlisle and star Dirk Nowitzki both essentially confirmed the deal,
acknowledging their excitement about adding Odom to the defending NBA champions’
roster without losing a player in return.

Odom wasn’t at the Lakers’ training complex Sunday, and his teammates aren’t
thrilled to know he’s probably on his way to Dallas, which swept the Lakers out
of the second round of the postseason last spring.

“Especially to them,” Bryant said. “We were supposed to come back and get
them back. It’s tough. … Do I think we got too little? Who did we get? I don’t
think Mark Cuban is protesting this trade.”

Bryant and Derek Fisher don’t know what to make of their front office’s
aggressive pursuit of Chris Paul followed by an apparent change of focus toward
Orlando center Dwight Howard, who has requested a trade from the Magic, after
the NBA blocked a megatrade for Paul on Thursday. Odom didn’t attend the Lakers’
first two days of practice after the team attempted to include him with Gasol in
that three-team trade for Paul.

“As a basketball player, it confuses you as to what your focus should be,”
Fisher said. “I’m very disappointed and frustrated for (Odom and Gasol).”

Although Bryant expressed his faith in general manager Mitch Kupchak, he
would prefer to have Odom in camp as the Lakers regroup from last season’s
failed attempt at a threepeat.

“You’re talking about the sixth man of the year last year,” Bryant said of
Odom, who averaged 14.4 points, 8.7 rebounds and 3 assists while playing in all
82 games last season. “He played lights-out. I don’t understand the criticism
of reality shows and this. I don’t get that. He had his best season last year,
clearly wasn’t a distraction, played his (rear) off. I don’t get where that
comes from.”

Odom starred in a reality show last season with his wife, Khloe Kardashian,
clearly enjoying his celebrity at the main intersection of sports and Hollywood.
Kardashian tweeted obliquely about her excitement when news of the apparent
trade surfaced Saturday night.

Even Odom’s contract is a good deal for his employers: He will make a modest
$8.9 million this season in the third year of a four-year deal, which can be
bought out next season for a modest amount. The Lakers’ trade exception means
they can acquire a player making Odom’s salary or less without the usual
complications, but it would be only one part of a hypothetical deal for Howard
or another star.

With this chaos on top of the usual amount of drama surrounding the
high-profile Lakers, new coach Mike Brown is attempting to plan for a season
with no idea who will be in his lineup in two weeks when Los Angeles hosts the
Chicago Bulls in their Christmas season opener. Gasol and fellow big man Andrew
Bynum went through their third day of workouts on Sunday not knowing whether
they would have a chance to use all this new information.

“If I’m here, I’m looking forward to the season,” said Bynum, who knows
he’s rumored to be the main component in any proposed deal for Howard. “If they
were able to pull a move like that off, it would be great for the organization,
and I’d be in Orlando hooping.”

Lakers forward Matt Barnes has been in contact with Howard, his former
teammate in Orlando. Barnes said he doesn’t need to sell Howard on the Lakers.

While Odom stayed away from the Lakers, Gasol reported to the team despite
the possibility of his imminent departure. He remains hopeful he’ll stay in Los
Angeles, but the four-time All-Star no longer knows what to think about his near
future.

“I understand this is a business, and it’s become more of a business than a
sport nowadays,” Gasol said. “It hasn’t been extremely easy to be calm and
quiet and not think about the different possibilities. But I’m still here, and
I’m thankful for that.”

Gotta run!.
