Lakers, Dennis Schroder back in contract talks after failed extension

According to the latest reports, the Los Angeles Lakers and point guard Dennis Schroder are back in the conference room, trying to eke out a suitable contract with eyes on the end of February.

The German player was acquired by the Lakers in November, in exchange for Danny Green and a first-round draft pick. Schroder, 27, made his debut in the season opener against the Clippers, almost hitting a triple-double, just short a couple of assists. His performance was more than adequate, and given his history in the NBA, it’s hardly a surprise that the Lakers are doing everything they can to keep the excellent basketball player in the ranks.

According to reports earlier in the week, the L.A. Lakers already approached Dennis Schroder with a contract extension offer, which the German-born point guard declined. unverified reports have Schroder turning down a supposedly 2-year $33.4 million extension offer from the Lakers. The new addition to the Lakers team will be eligible for an even larger extension of his contract after mid February, when his current $15.5 million is set to expire. He will be eligible to receive as much as $83 million over 4 years, should he finds a way to max out the Lakers during negotiations.

Schroeder moved to LA from Oklahoma City Thunder, where he spent two years, but did not find space on the regular team and was more often a sixth man. His NBA debut was in 2013 for the Atlanta Hawks , after moving from Germany’s Phantoms Braunschweig.
